The Hershel “Woody” Williams Scholarship supports educational advancement for Marine Corps survivors and Marine Corps League families in West Virginia. Established through the Department of West Virginia Marine Corps League, the program honors a legacy of service by helping eligible applicants pursue college, trade school, and other approved educational opportunities.
About Hershel “woody” williams
Hershel “Woody” Williams was a West Virginian, United States Marine, and Medal of Honor recipient whose heroism at Iwo Jima became part of Marine Corps history.
After World War II, he continued a life of service through the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Marine Corps Reserve, and years of advocacy for veterans and Gold Star families.
He later founded what became the Woody Williams Foundation, helping establish Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments across the country and continuing his mission of honoring those who served and sacrificed.
The purpose of the Hershel “Woody” Williams Scholarship is to assist and encourage United States Marine Corps survivors and Marine Corps League families in West Virginia as they pursue higher education and academic achievement after high school, while also offering eligible members of the League the opportunity to advance their educational goals.
The mission of the scholarship program is to provide scholarships of $1,000 each to eligible family members of current members of the Department of West Virginia Marine Corps League who are pursuing further education.
Before beginning the application, please make sure you meet the eligibility requirements and have all required supporting documents ready. Incomplete applications will not be considered, and all materials must be submitted by March 15. Applicants are also responsible for completing and submitting their own materials.
